It’s 2016, and unless you live in Oregon, Washington or Vermont, your insurance based healthcare is NOT going to keep you well.

As much as I cringe at the analogy of our bodies being like cars, people inevitably think of themselves that way all the time.  The squeeky wheel gets ignored until it’s a screaming or debilitating pain.

We pay for car insurance and know it’s going to be there when we crash (after paying our deductible).  But, we don’t expect car insurance to wash our windows, vacuum the interior, change the tires, the oil, the belts or even cover our annual tune-ups to see how things might be deteriorating within.

Health insurance is not much different in most states.  It will help out with emergency room visits, and sometimes cover basic screenings for life-threatening illnesses (PAPs, prostate exams and mammograms for cancer, bone density screenings for osteoporosis, etc…)  And it usually covers an annual exam to check for hypertension, monitor growth and BMI and provide medications that treat the symptoms.

Unfortunately, our current medical model misses out on how to keep people healthy.  While pharmaceutical medications are necessary in many circumstances, supporting health naturally so we don’t need them or improving health while we’re on them so we only need them short-term is ideal.  It’s no fault of modern Doctors, its the larger systems emphasis on drugs and surgery as the only medicinal tools.

Most of the current drug safety information is based on short-term controlled trials and the harm of utilizing medications is always acknowledged in their litany of side effects.  As research continues, we learn of previously unknown harmful effects from long-term or combined medication use. 

Fortunately, humans have been living a very long time and we have an immense history of health and vitality to learn from traditions around the world.  Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, Native American medicine, Rudolf Steiner and Anthroposophical medicine, Western herbalism and the European Eclectic physicians are among my favorites.

This season, the transition for kids returning to school after a playful and sometimes exhausting summer begins.  To spare yourself and your little ones the stress and upheaval of a new routine, prepare their bodies for the transition.

Early Mornings

The transition to living a life on schedule is a dramatic shift in some households where kids have been able to sleep in to their hearts content.  Sleep deprivation can cause significant challenges in mood and behavior.  Even missing 30 minutes of sleep per night can cause a young student to operate at a whole grade level below what they’re authentically capable of!

Crank back the clock gradually by re-setting the bedtime routine.  Setting the bedtime back 15 minutes each night is enough to shift the system without causing the confusion and insomnia of trying to get to bed too early.

Sleep support for the routine’s transition:

–       Chamomile tea is a safe and yummy sleep aid for all ages.

–       Passionflower solid extract is useful to help calm hyperactivity.

–       Valerian tincture is useful for adults to get to sleep earlier, but is not recommended for children due to its affect on neurotransmitters.

–       Warm baths with Epsom salts and lavender flowers is a luxurious way for anyone to relax, ideal for the whole family!

High-Paced Activity

Keeping up with the intellectual demands of the school year can be an abrupt transition from summer’s freedom.  Mental overload is a true obstacle that can be very intense for some kids.

Nutritional support to help the brain thrive:

–       Blood sugar balance – breakfast feasts are an important way to give your kids the tools their brains and bodies will need to perform their best.  Approximately 30% protein, 30% vegetables and 30% complex carbohydrates (whole grains) is the formula for optimal blood sugar.  This is especially important during phases of significant growth.

–       Omega 3 fatty acids – supplementing the brain with omega 3’s in the form of liquid or chewable fish oils gives kids a neurological boost for extra synaptic activity.

–       Fresh fruit or protein snacks are key to keeping the energy going.  Crackers, sweets, breads, cookies, pretzels and other carbohydrate full packaged foods will encourage a blood sugar rush and predictable crash that won’t be appreciated by the teachers.

Afternoon Ease

Just when they’re completely wired or totally zapped, kids return home from their active day at school to deal with all the aspects of family life.  Chores, homework, connecting with family and the myriad of activities they’re involved with can push stress over the top.  Assist the afternoon ease by facilitating a stress free after-school time and help their bodies learn stress management early.

Tools for after-school ease :

–       Afternoon napping – Surveys of individuals who routinely nap in the afternoons demonstrate greater productivity and brain function.  30 minutes of quiet reading or just lying still sharing stories of the day’s activity can help make this down time appreciated.

–       Attention – while focus is a challenge for many kids at school, attention it is something everyone benefits from when received from others.  Make the transition out of school activity a special time for parent-child connection.

–       Tea time – the tradition of afternoon tea is especially helpful for the transition from one hectic thing to the next.  Licorice root is a very sweet, delicious herb that helps balance stress.  Combined with lemonbalm or another nervine herb greatly balances the mood.

–       Nature – spending time in nature greatly reduces stress hormones in the body.  Plan some after-school nature exploration, hikes or just a picnic out back.

Immune Assault

Back to school means back to the plethora of immune exposures that for some can be year-long sniffles and sneezes.  While it is beneficial for the immune system to be challenged, the way we deal with it makes the difference between a beneficial experience for the body or a harmful one.

It’s the time of year to spend more time each day outdoors than in.  Eating meals outdoors on the patio or at the park is a great way to soak up the sun or relax in the shade and enjoy the season!

Reflexively, we may reach for the sandwiches, chips, pasta salad, juice boxes and beer.  But, taking a moment to consider what our bodies might really want and we just might find our perfect picnic looks completely different.

What is Paleo?

The Paleo diet, short for Paleolithic is a dietary trend that is changing people’s energy, sense of vitality, digestive embarrassment, waistlines and much more.  The gist of the story is, skip the grains.  And the dairy, processed oils and junk food.

Long before farming our distant ancestors are believed to have lived a hunter-gatherer lifestyle.  Leaves, berries, tubers, insects and meats were the most abundant food.  As anyone who has grown a garden may know, grains are not the most easily accessible food source.  Our spinach, kale, celery, cucumbers, carrots and more are ready to be eaten as soon as they’ve plumped right up in the ground.  From field to fork, grains take considerably more processing in order to be edible.

Health Benefits

One of our great challenges as human beings is that our biology does not keep up with our creativity and innovation.  Today, grains may be the most readily available food source.  Crackers, cookies, pastas, breads and chips store well and are easily packed with preservatives to last even longer.  Modified from their original form with science, grains become puffs, tings, flakes, charms and other curiosity provoking yummy crunchy things.

Interesting as they seem, grains tend to pack less nutritional punch than vegetables, fruits and meats.  The purpose of the grain of a plant, like all seeds is to preserve itself through the alimentary canal of a larger creature who happens to chomp it down.  Then it will plant into the dirt with some voluptuous compost and start life anew.  Grains come well equipped with a protective force field known as phytic acid.  This compound limits the grains digestibility by tightly binding minerals creating a strong internal layer.

For someone with a powerful digestive system (pH drops below 3 in the combustion chamber of the stomach’s hydrochloric acid bath) phytic acid may be no big deal.  But to the lady eating while she’s driving her car, the guy who’s munching during a meeting, the kids eating mid-stride during backyard playtime and Mom who hardly sits down anymore to eat, the hydrochloric acid may only be a trickle because the body’s attention is elsewhere.

We all need to take a break from life to do nothing but appreciate and ruminate our delicious meals.  But to make things easier on ourselves skipping grains may be the thing for you.  Gluten intolerance, Celiac disease, irritable bowel, gas, bloating, Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis, fatigue, headaches and more have been successfully eliminated by some individuals with a grain diet.

The Picnic Basket

Appetizer – Fruity Salad: finely chopped apple, celery and raisins with fresh squeezed lemon juice.  Get your palate ready with this nice mix to give your blood sugar a boost.  Fruits tend to digest best on their own which can also elevate the blood sugar too quickly.  Paired with a watery, fiber rich vegetable like celery and a balance is struck in flavor and benefits.

Main Dish – Seaweed Wraps.  Create a layer of prosciuto, lettuce leaves, sprouts and sauerkraut in the center of a nori sheet.  Moisten one edge and wrap tightly around the inner filling material.  The moisture of the sauerkraut will help hold the nori together, but don’t wait too long to eat it or it may get soggy!  Seaweeds are one of our under-appreciated foods in western culture as their mineral and specifically iodine content can’t hardly be beat!  Be sure to source from clean(er) waters as they can bind to contaminants from the waters in which they grow.

Side – Salted cucumber slices dipped into tahini.  Double yum!  This quick and tasty snack is high protein with the sesame seed tahini and is a great source of calcium.

After-Snack – Coconut date rolls.  Easy to travel, these treats can be easily made at home by tossing some dates into the food processor and them rolling them in shredded coconut.  Add some cocoa powder for some extra enjoyment.

Dessert – Lemonade popsicles can be made to be electrolyte packed treats for kids wearing themselves out on hot days.  Combine a squeeze of lemon, pureed berries and some liquid stevia to suite your palate.  Pour into ice cube trays with toothpicks to grab and eat quickly once frozen!

Drink – The herbal tea combination of hibiscus & peppermint is ideal for a hot summer day.  Both herbs have a cooling nature and delicious flavor.  Stillwater has a Summer Cooler blend with this combo available in the store!

Like all diets, no one way of eating will suite everyone.  Vegetarian diets, vegan diets, Anti-inflammatory, raw foods, the Mediterranean diet and more all have their place and usefulness depending on where a person is at in life’s phases. Deep fried pickles, a rack of ribs, sweet potato fries and pan roasted duck breast are some of the menu favorites here in Lyons.  Who doesn’t want to indulge in the bottom of a keg filled with fried foods from time to time?  While this might sound appealing, it also makes many folks belly’s turn with the impending indigestion that is sure to result.  With the fat-free era just shortly behind us, high cholesterol and gall-bladder disease nearly ubiquitous with aging, we still have a lot to learn about fats.

We all know high cholesterol is bad, but low is problematic as well.  High HDL (high density lipoprotein or the good fats) is considered good but too high signifies problems as well.  Monitoring the details of our health to prevent disease becomes more and more important as we grow older.  We can learn a lot about how our self-care is affecting our health with an understanding of fat metabolism.

The basic tests monitored for our fat metabolism are cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDL.  These 4 basic tests are helpful for recognizing risk factors for heart disease, diabetes, auto-immune processes and hormonal imbalances.  Research has continued to improve our understanding of what the numbers mean.

Cholesterol: the body makes cholesterol as the backbone for every hormone in the body.  It is an integral component of every cell membrane in the body in addition to being a main component of tissue healing.  Cholesterol is made in the liver and reflects the capacity of the liver to support health.  There is an indirect relationship between fat consumption and cholesterol, but the greater influence is the health of the liver and gallbladder. 

Triglycerides: these are the main fat storage molecules in the body.  They are what we convert excess food energy into for later use.  The triglyceride level in the blood tends to be a more accurate reflection of our nutritional status, particularly carbohydrate intake.  As carbohydrates are broken down in the liver, they are converted into triglycerides to be stored.

LDL: low density lipoproteins (aka LDL’s) have come to be known as the “bad cholesterols” in the body.  These fatty acid transporters have a unique role in physiology.  Fats help tissue heal.  An analogy to this is that LDL’s are like ambulances.  They are constantly going out into the system to address inflammation in the body.  The higher the LDL level, the higher the inflammation.

HDL: high density lipoproteins (aka HDL’s) are considered the “good cholesterols” in the body.  The HDL level in the blood is considered a reflection of how much beneficial fats a person is consuming.  However, they also serve to help with tissue healing.  The HDL’s are like the clean up crew.  They are going out into the body tissues to clean up the messes made that called the LDL’s in the first place. 

One of the most common misperceptions about fat is that dietary fat equates to body fat.  Consuming fats such as butter, oils and dairy products do not make us fat alone.  All traditional diets have relied heavily on natures most calorie dense food sources including with much variation; dairy products, eggs, insects, land and sea animals.  However, the misconception of dietary fat in the US’s early understanding of nutrition drove the “fat-free fad” to indoctrinate every man, woman and child to be convinced that it was better to eat margarine than butter.  What we have observed is higher incidences of heart disease, diabetes and atherosclerosis, which are the main concerns with high cholesterol to begin with.

What you need to know:

–       If you have high cholesterol:  Support for liver function is critical.  Increase leafy green vegetables, exercise and minimize toxic exposures.  Major detoxification work may be necessary to create change.

–       If you have low cholesterol: Encourage the liver’s anabolic process, or the capacity to build up substances.  Ensuring adequate fat absorption with gallbladder function is key.  

–       If you have high triglycerides: Reduce carbohydrate intake.  Refined carbohydrates (breads, pasta, cereals, crackers) offer little in terms of nutritional support and even complex carbohydrates (rice, quinoa and other whole grains) can be problematic for some individuals.

–       If you have low triglycerides: Support dietary habits to ensure adequate consumption by having routine mealtimes and minimizing obstacles to absorption.  Support gallbladder function.

–       If you have high LDL’s: Addressing whole body inflammation is key to reducing LDL’s.  Improving circulation, removing food allergens, minimizing stress so the body has a chance to adequately heal.

–       If you have loww LDL’s: This is almost never an issue! 

–       If you have high HDL’s: Concern for auto-immune processes exist with high HDL’s.  Support immune function and detoxification processes.

–       If you have low HDL’s: Increase beneficial dietary fats and support gallbladder function to ensure proper absorption.

And finally,

–       If you aspire to have a long, healthy life: Consume foods high in omega 3 fatty acids, allow for 5-10% of each meal to be a healthy fat including fish, olive oil, coconut oils, whole nuts and seeds.  For more information on the importance of fats in our diets, please join us on for our THRIVE! Preventative medicine is the key to affordable healthcare.  The more we can work to keep ourselves well, the greater contributors we our to our community.  Many states in the US have taken the steps to license Naturopathic Doctors in order to establish their place in the medical world.  Most primary care Doctors are licensed as an MD which means they have completed medical education within the conventional medical, or allopathic approach to health.  This system is ideal for handling emergencies and extreme health imbalances, yet it often has little to offer in keeping people well.  A common recommendation to “watch and wait” with a sub-clinical disease process leaves little hope for improvement.

Naturopathic Doctors are trained in the western medical system equivalent to the MD education.  However, the emphasis shifts in the 3rd and 4th years of training to incorporate herbal medicine, nutrition, homeopathy, spinal manipulation, physiotherapy and more.  The ideal healthcare system incorporates all systems of healthcare to take the best of each and apply them in an effective manner.  For a comparative review of the education of leading Naturopathic and Conventional medical schools in the US, see the attached document here:  Nat-Med-Ed-Comp-Curricula.

Licensing Naturopathic doctors benefits communities in a variety of ways.  It makes more physicians available in an era where there is a nationwide shortage of primary care doctors.  It allows the option for the first point of contact for patients to be with Doctors who emphasize what people can do for themselves to improve their health.  Naturopathic Doctors spend more time with patients traditionally, allowing for more personal attention and an opportunity to explore the mind-body relationship.  Naturopathic Doctors are experts in herb-drug and food-drug interactions providing a close watch to notice when dosages may need to be altered to support the changes in the individuals body.  This expertise is critical in a time where patients glean a great deal of their health information from online sources and natural food store clerks.  People often end up taking a wide variety of substances without any oversight of how things may be working together in their body.

As a healthcare practitioner, my experience spans over 20 years in a variety of roles.  Initially working in home health and institutional care as a Nurse Aid, I observed the end stage of care for a wide variety of chronic health conditions treated exclusively with allopathic therapies.  From there, I witnessed thousands of patients diagnosed with chronic diseases improve as a medical student intern in Integrative Medicine clinics.  As a medical researcher with the Helfgott Research Institute in Portland, I got to know the process of determining what works in healthcare from the evidenced based model.  While the research in natural therapies is generally smaller studies due to financial constraint, there is plenty of data to support its use, once as we begin to look.

Licensed as a Naturopathic primary care Physician in Portland, Oregon I was able to provide both natural and pharmaceutical tools for illness, covered by health insurance.  Some patients prefer to avoid pharmaceuticals altogether or have responded negatively in the past to drug therapies.  Still, there are a wide variety of options to choose from when treating illness with natural medicine.  Other patients present with a health condition that will improve more quickly with pharmaceuticals but whose underlying health can be supported with natural medicine to prevent long term damage.  Many individuals experience a state of health that is not clinically ill, but not 100% well either.  This is where natural medicine can make dramatic change in a person’s life.  Using tools from all systems together gives us the greatest potential to improve health and have lasting change.

Please support Colorado House Bill 13-1111 concerning “Regulation of Naturopathic Doctors.”

False and misleading claims are being circulated from those fraudulently using the title, Naturopathic Doctor, in order to practice medicine in Colorado.  HB 1111 will protect the consumer by allowing them to check credentials and file complaints against anyone using the title, Naturopathic Doctor or ND.This legislation will protect the health and well being of Coloradans to conveniently and easily:

Determine who is qualified to be called a Naturopathic Doctor and who has completed a four-year graduate level clinical doctorate degree from an accredited naturopathic medical program, has passed a national exam, and has met other qualifications for regulation;

Check credentials and backgrounds of those who are Registered as Naturopathic Doctors;

Lodge complaints against a Naturopathic Doctor should harm or wrongdoing be suspected;

Be confident that when someone is called a “doctor,” that he or she has the training to provide the safe and effective care inherent in the title;

Be assured that their Naturopathic Doctor will communicate and collaborate fully with other health care providers as a member of the health care continuum; and

Be assured that the Naturopathic Doctor they choose has completed annual mandatory continued competency and carries adequate malpractice insurance.

DORA has reviewed this profession numerous times since 1993 and has recommended that Naturopathic Doctors be regulated in 1998, 2005,and in 2008 which is the last time that Colorado law allowed Naturopathic Doctors to undergo the Sunrise process.

The time is now to pass this bill.  Please vote YES on HB 1111!
